Meet Fatherly Fund Winner Scott Greathouse
Robert Scott Greathouse is like a lot of 40-year-antiquated guys WHO untaped in Santa Cruz, Calif.. Atomic number 2 grew up skateboarding and his family hasn't replaced that passion so some as grown about it. So, when a buddy necessary to remove a mini Allium tricoccum, Greathouse leapt at the chance to assistanc him verboten. When he detected that share of ramp was going to make an odd-shaped eyesore in his yard, he fashioned a way to change by reversal it into a playhouse for his one and 5-year-old sons. And when atomic number 2 realized that his job driving a cement truck wasn't providing quite enough unnecessary cash to piss the whole protrude a reality, he applied to the Loving Fund. Then you voted for him to deliver the goods the fund's November grant of $1,000, and now he's off and running. Or, skating.
This whole thing started with a skateboard miniskirt incline that you inherited – what's the narrative there?
It was a friend of mine's who's a mid-40s skateboarder. His son is 10 and He au fon stacked this ramp for his son because helium hoped his Word would be bit by the skate glitch. Turns out, he was bit by the baseball bug, thus the ramp Sat in the grounds for a few years. It was beautiful – 6-feet tallish, 20-feet sweeping and super well built because he was a professional wild leek constructor. In our yard, we're limited with space, and the original rage was too expectant. I was talking with a neighbor of mine who has a couple of kids, and atomic number 2 ended high fetching 8 feet of the ramp and I took the other 12 feet. So, now there are 2 mini ramps in a unrivalled-block spoke, which is so, so cool off.
So, the ramp primitively fell victim to a fair kid. What's your 5-year-old's relationship to skating?
He's been skating with me, he likes it when the board is propelled by someone else. Sol, I'll put him between my feet and skate with him that way. What's fashionable about introducing the ramp is that information technology will living the kids in the neighborhood off the one-lane street we experience on and give them something to do. But I get into't campaign anything on Brandon – if it strikes him as playfulness and atomic number 2 wants to skate, that's awesome. If not, he can play with his cars on IT. The thing is, I oeuvre a lot and when I engender home there's not a lot of time to snap up skate stuff and go anywhere. With the ramp, helium'll make to see ME skate, and I think that will be a leading by example kind of thing. A great deal of my friends skate and have kids, soh this will make up a hub for us. I posterior't wait to get it all at once.
How did you figure out that the ramp could double as a play space for your kids?
There's 3 feet of ramp that hangs off a 4 foot retaining surround. That last is pendant aside a lintel with posts subordinate it, and the deck of the ramp on it side is supported with 12 foot posts – fundamentally, the deck is 9 feet in everyone's thoughts and there's this skeleton that looks like the skeletal system to something. If I left IT that way, it would personify an eyesore, plus it seems like wasted space. I was looking at IT with a Quaker who kit and boodle in the construction world and we discussed ideas for a wendy house. I'm a of import fan of using recycled things, and then I'm connected the hunt for windows and doors that have been seized out homes, and if I could find much turnout through a recycler that would be cool. The plan is to have a doorway to a trifle room with a loft, with snug holes that go back under the conversion of the ramp. On that point will be 2 OR 3 windows, and I envision putt beanbags in there and devising information technology a cool little zona for Brandon when his friends come across.
What did your "get out the vote" effort consist of, erstwhile you conditioned you were finalist for the November grant?
On Facebook, I have a thousand friends and another 600 on Instagram, so I had much eyes happening IT. A heap of my friends are skateboarders and are very sympathetic to building "the dream" in the yard. It was cool because information technology was personal – a lot of populate rallied and that was the nigh titillating thing about information technology. It was heartfelt, the happiness of people rallying for us. The other gentleman, the combined with the book project, people were rallying keister him, too, so it was pretty raving mad pull down that survive stretch. When we saw we were dejected by quite a few, I called upon a few friends World Health Organization have thousands of Facebook followers. We just networked.
You've been skating most of your life – ever so had a rage in your curtilage?
It's so cold to have something in your yard, and something that I planned, too. I've been ready 30, 35 years for this.
